Winter SKOLstice Tree Lighting

This Saturday, December 2, Viking Lakes will be lighting up the first ever Winter SKOLstice Holiday Tree thanks to partners at Mauer GMC. The celebration starts at 5pm with free hot chocolate and ice skating here at Viking Lakes (skate rentals are available!). The ceremony hosted by The Common Man begins at 6pm. This ceremony features holiday carols, an exciting countdown and an appearance by a bright green GMC Electric Hummer. Dress warm and get ready for holiday magic.

Caroling and Holiday Party

Our Caroling event and Holiday Party is on December 21st. Meet at 5:15pm at the Eagan Pointe Senior Living Facility by the fire station off of Diffley and 35E (4232 Blackhawk Rd). Susan Schuster has agreed to accompany the singers and Carol Wirsbinski is providing the lyrics! We will also be joined by a few of our Interact friends. Wear festival holiday colors and get ready to lift the spirits of the residents.

Then afterwards, around 7:00pm, Inez and John Bergquist are hosting our Holiday Party. Even if you are not singing with us, please join us at the party. Food will be provided, please bring wine or beer to share. Address: 3665 Ashbury Road.

Rotary Book Club

Come to our first ever EKSR Book Club, featuring a short story, The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mystery novels and stories. Synopsis on the story from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventure_of_the_Beryl_Coronet.

Tiaras are welcome but optional (Inez has a jewel box of them that you can borrow from for the evening).

It is fun to read the story but please come even if you haven’t read it. John Bergquist, BSI, a member of the international Sherlock Holmes society, the Baker Street Irregulars, will give some background on the story, and anything else you’d like to know about Sherlock Holmes.

You might know that the University of Minnesota Library has the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes materials in the country, including Empress Alexandra’s copy of the Hound of the Baskervilles, with her cipher on the red leather cover. Tours are available!

Bring a snack to share.  Wine (left over from the Christmas party), beer and soft drinks will be available.

DCTC Chili Cook Off

Rotaract Club at Dakota County Technical College is holding the 13th Annual Chili Cook Off Thursday, April 18, 2024, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main commons next to the Student Life Center on the college’s campus in Rosemount, Minnesota.
Faculty and staff contribute chili recipes for the annual competition. This year’s event is expecting 25 different chili recipes to sample. You only pay $4 cash for a slice of cornbread and a soda along with the opportunity to taste each recipe. Attendees will vote for their favorite chili as usual. All proceeds go to support Rotaract Club activities.

Susan Ryan, Sleep in Heavenly Peace

As an all volunteer nonprofit chapter of an international organization, the Twin Cities South chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) joyfully builds and delivers beds to kids 3-17 that are sleeping on the floor and in other uncomfortable situations. They are locally funded by organizations and individuals, receive support from local volunteers to build and deliver beds, and serve kids in portions of Dakota and Scott counties. Beds are assembled in the child's sleeping area and come with mattress, pillow and bedding so they are sleep ready the same day.

We will be collecting new twin sized bedding sets for this organization (in partnership with the Eagan Interact Club) so please conder bringing a donation to this meeting.

Wallie Kuchinski has been on board all 15 seasons of the Glenn Caruso era, guided a defense that earned a reputation among Division III's best and quickly placed it as one of the best in Division I FCS. His defensive athletes received 15 All-America honors in the last 11 seasons.

Dr. Jody Janati, Find Your Conversation Peace

Trainer, speaker, conference facilitator… Jody Janati has an Ed.D. degree in Organizational Leadership, and a M.A. degree in Speech Communication. She currently teaches in the Communication Studies Department at the University of Minnesota. She offers a variety of public and professional workshops on conflict reduction tactics and effective communication skills throughout the year. During her academic career she has held a number of administrative positions in higher education, taught for various colleges in the Twin Cities metro area and authored four books.
